We discuss our Sun signs casually, usually as an ice breaker, and it’s common to hear “I don’t relate to my Sun sign” in response. This is then used as a reason for why astrology is fake. It’s only more recently that public knowledge has expanded to include “the big three” (Sun, Moon, Rising) and this is often used as a way to negate the Sun sign, to render it useless, because now there are seemingly other signs to pick from and identify with. This isn’t really a criticism either, there’s no reason to force someone to understand an ancient system of symbolic language in these low stakes, often surface level environments. As a result though, we are missing context for what the Sun actually symbolizes.
The reason some may not relate to their Sun sign is because they don’t understand its function, nor have they actually grown into it yet.
The Sun requires a hero’s journey, a set of Solar trials, to discover the mythology of the sign it’s in. Your Moon sign is what you are innately born with, your instincts. Chances are, unless the lunar part of your life is severely repressed or there’s a giant stellium elsewhere, this is the sign that you most naturally relate to as a symbol of the body. Alternatively, the Sun leaves life yet to be discovered, it is a symbol that measures time– hours and seasons of our lives– where purpose and identity is developed instead of given in full. What would be the point of living if we were all of ourselves, all at once, right at birth? The Sun is the journey of becoming, discovering what has always existed unconsciously within. Understanding this part of your chart, the Sun’s house placement and its aspects, requires self realization.
The New Moon in Aries perfected early this morning and I’m thinking of the Aries Sun and its own hero’s journey. A classic Aries Sun dilemma regards courage and the agency of choice. I have met dozens of Aries Sun people, and especially if this is their only placement in this sign, they tend to think that they’re “bad at being an Aries,” not really relating to the brutish or courageous qualities of the sign. It’s not the case for everyone, we all have individual charts and our own timing for when these Solar trials arise but very often, Aries Sun people start off in the first 2-3 decades of their lives playing it safe as shy or frightened of their own impact. This is the journey.
If Aries Suns were born all of themselves, all at once, there would be no opportunity to slay the dragon and to properly discover who they are. These trailblazing qualities are always there, lying dormant beneath the surface, waiting for an external event or calling to bring these qualities into the light of day. In the case of an Aries Sun that is aligned with their stereotype from an early age, it’s likely that they are expressing a very shallow, immature part of this sign. A large part of the Aries daimon requires action and bravery but before a young Aries knows what it’s doing, this might come out as reactive or urgent action that struggles with follow through. For the undeveloped Aries, there is a fundamental misunderstanding of what true “courageousness” is, frequently mistaken for the need to assert power. The Sun brings clarity and sight to these themes over time until their movements are more aligned, no longer reacting to the world, but creating a direction for it.
I bring this up at the time of the New Moon because with the Sun and the Moon in the same sign, this joins the instinctual with a living invitation. Every New Moon is a chance to bring together the innate, natural guidance system from the body with an external opportunity for expression. In Aries, this is the perfect time to assess our individual identities, maybe even contemplating our own Solar trials and what is asking to be expressed through us. With the Mercury-Mars-Saturn conjunction (also in Aries) looming and going exact on the 19th and 20th of April, it’s possible that we’re all feeling quite a bit of pressure somewhere. Maybe it's pressure to act in line with an older identity that isn’t aligning with new internal changes, struggling with a decision that splits the mind and the heart. This could be a moment where it’s not as easy to relate to the things that you used to, pressure in the body ultimately builds as an uncomfortable catalyst for change and new beginnings.
